How it works with the API

It pulls from three separate sources:

ISS Position: wheretheiss.at
The core tracking API. Called every 5 seconds with no caching (always fresh), it returns the station's current latitude, longitude, altitude, velocity, and visibility status. Each response adds a new point to a 60-point trail array, giving a rolling 5-minute ground track on the map.

Crew: corquaid.github.io
A community-maintained JSON file that lists everyone currently aboard the ISS. Fetched once on load and cached for 1 hour. It only returns names, with no bios or photos.

Wikipedia: on demand
When a user clicks a crew member's name, the component calls Wikipedia's REST API (/api/rest_v1/page/summary/{name}) client-side to pull that person's bio extract and portrait thumbnail. Nothing is prefetched. It only fires when someone actually clicks, keeping the initial load fast.

The position and crew calls go through the Next.js /api/iss-tracker route handler server-side. The Wikipedia call is the one exception. It goes directly from the browser since it's triggered interactively and Wikipedia's API is public with no key required.
